Nepal Institute of Peace (NIP) is a non governmental, non-profit, non-partisan organization managed by a group of human right activists committed to peace, justice and human rights in Nepal. It has been working on human rights and Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) since its inception in 2002.

NIP has a mission to promote a culture of peace by organizing and supporting initiatives to reduce inter-group and interpersonal conflict through varied platforms based on field research, lobby and advocacy, training and networking.


NIP is moving in the following directions to achieve the its organizational mission:

  1. Lobby strongly to stop killing, abduction and arrest owing to ethnic and regional conflict
  2. Advocate state and international community to address livelihood issues of the people
  3. Work with like minded organizations as a pressure group to ensure the guarantees fundamental human rights Work with NGO community to facilitate more dialogues and an opportunity for the citizens to engage in the restoration of peace and harmony in the society
  4. Advocate and lobby for the human rights of people displaced by natural disasters

Vision:
"A prospective, non-violent, just tolerant and value-led Nepalese society"

Activities:

  • To share vision with people of their rights to peace and train peace activists on the concepts and culture of peace and human rights;
  • To conduct researches on local and national problems, emphasizing violation of human rights issues, especially the human rights of vulnerable groups, which till date has been generally neglected or unrecognized;
  • To focus on protection of the rights of the minority community, refugees, women and children of Nepal 
  • To focus on protection of the rights of the displaced community by natural disasters
  • To carry out research on emerging human right violations due to the on-going conflict so that appropriate programmes are developed and implement systematically
  • To establish a center for peace programmes and facilitate and organize courses on peace and conflict transformation;
  • To organize seminars, workshops and trainings, based on research on peace and conflict studies in and outside Nepal;
  • To highlight emerging problems and human rights violations identified at national, regional and international levels, so that appropriate actors are held accountable for their actions;
  • To continue advocacy and lobbying on peace issues at all levels and share Nepal's perspective on peace and conflict at different platforms;
  • To establish networks with other organizations working on similar issues at national, regional and international level.

A synopsis of the Past Activities:
NIP was instrumental in rights of the internally displaced people in the past. As a part of Campaign for rights of Internally Displaced People NIP facilitated dialogues among multi-disciplinary groups and published the following literatures: 

  • Internally Displaced Persons in Nepal (in collaboration with Calcutta Research Group);
  • NIP published an Internal Displacement Advocacy Toolkit;
  • Research on IDPs in collaboration with CRG;
  • Guide to Minority Rights: Directory, Personnel and Publications;
  • Handbook for peace, human rights activists and journalist in collaboration with South Asia Forum for Human Rights

Organizational Structure:

  • The organization consists of an Advisory Committee, Executive Board and general Members.
  • The Advisory Committee comprises of members with among others international experience on conflict and peace themes on child rights, displaced persons, refugees;the General Members and Executive Boards consist of members with varied academic backgrounds and working experience to reflect the multiple themes that Nepal is struggling with, not only as one of the least developed countries in the world, but in addition to the multiple issues emerging as a result of the internal turmoil which it has been experiencing for more than a decade. the members' academic backgrounds range from social activities to lawyers, anthropologists, sociologists, peace educator, demographer, public health specialist, journalists and information technology specialists.
  • The members have experience in working on disability, gender, children, refugees, public health, education, civil, political and economic and social and cultural right, research and advocacy. the team has experience of working on human right issues from years to recent graduates. Many of the team members have had exposure and experience of working at regional and international level on human rights issues, as well as direct experience of working in conflict situations.
